1. SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS :
Manuscripts submitted to the El Hakim Journal must not have been previously published, nor be submitted or in the process of being published in another journal.
Any manuscript submitted is subject to the opinion of expert readers whose approval, after possible modifications, is necessary for its publication. French is the language of the journal.
The editors reserve the right to modify the form of the manuscript to adapt it, if necessary, to the style of the journal.
In the case of partial or total reproduction in the manuscript of a document or illustration already published, the written permission of the editor and the authors must be provided.

- The title page: title of the article in French and English; authors; full contact details.
- The manuscript: abstracts and key words in French and English; text; bibliographical references; tables and table legends; figure legends; note calls should not be computerised, they are in square brackets and done manually; the notes come at the end of the text and include the figures in square brackets
- Figures (diagrams, drawings, colour or black and white photos) must be supplied as separate files, one file per figure, or as a compressed (zipped) folder with one file per figure.
2. ORGANIZATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT :
The El Hakim Journal publishes articles under various headings. Regardless of the publication section, the following are essential:
- The title page. The title page must be precise and concise, with its translation into English, and in lower case (e.g. Systemic Lupus, not SYSTEMIC LUPUS); the names of the authors (first name initial followed by a dot and last name: A. BENABDALLAH, not Ahmed BENABDALLAH); the full contact details of the authors.
- Authors affiliated with several institutions or organisations must provide separate addresses for each entity, indicated by superscript letters after their names; for the corresponding author: telephone and e-mail.
- Keywords: 5 words maximum (French and English).
- In general, the text should follow the structure of the abstract (see below), followed by acknowledgements and declaration of conflicts of interest, references, tables and legends (tables and figures).
Editorials
Editorials may be commissioned or may come from unsolicited submissions.
The length of the text should not exceed 2500 words and 20 references.
Original articles
The structured abstract (French and English): 1) Propos – Purpose (current state of the problem and objective(s) of the work), 2) Méthodes – Methods (clinical or experimental material, and methods used), 3) Résultats – Results, 4) Conclusion – Conclusion.
The abstract in French 250 words, in English 350 words.
Prepare 5 key words in French and in English.
The text should not exceed 5000 words nor contain more than 40 references.
Clarifications
The abstract is not structured. The French abstract should not exceed 250 words, the English should be 350 words.

Letters to the editor
This section is for original material expressed in a short article, such as a proposed reaction to an article previously published in the journal.
The text should not exceed 800 words, 10 references, 1 table and a maximum of 5 keywords (French and English). Provide a title in French and English. No abstract.
Images
The illustration (clinical or imaging image) must be made anonymous and provided in .jpeg or .tif format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Each illustration must be captioned and named in the text.
Other sections
The “Therapeutic news” section should not exceed 5000 words and 40 references. The sections “Speeches”, maximum 1000 words and 10 references; “Recommendations”, maximum 5000 words and 40 references; “Congress summaries” is not limited. These sections include an unstructured abstract.
Abstracts and keywords
Abstracts (in English and French) should not contain abbreviations or references. The abstract should be sufficiently informative for database searchers, and yet encourage full reading of the article. The quality of the English version of the abstract is essential (it is what appears in databases such as PubMed) and it is essential that it is validated by an English speaker.
The keywords must allow the article to be indexed, and must comply with the Medical Subjects Headings (MeSH) list of Index Medicus. They may be modified by the editor.
Text
The text of the manuscript must be clear. When typing (1.5 line spacing), never use advanced features of word processing software, such as automatic insertion of characters, fields, footnotes or images. Nomenclature should be consistent and invariant. Scientific symbols and units should conform to international standards. Abbreviations should be explained when they first appear in the text and their number should be kept to a minimum. Chemical compounds should be referred to by their generic name (International Non-proprietary Name [INN]), with the first letter in lower case. Speciality names, if they cannot be avoided, should be given in parentheses with the first letter in upper case (followed by the symbol: ® in superscript). Wherever possible, references should be placed at the end of the sentence.
Declaration of interest – Ethical behaviour
The journal follows international practice regarding conflicts of interest in relation to submitted publications.
All manuscript submissions must be accompanied by a declaration of interest.
A conflict of interest exists when an author and/or co-author has financial or personal relationships with other persons or organisations that may influence his/her professional judgements regarding a key value (patient welfare, research integrity…). The main conflicts of interest are financial interests, clinical trials, ad hoc interventions, family relationships…
All authors of the publication must declare all relationships that can be considered as having a potential conflict of interest solely in relation to the published text
In case there is no conflict of interest in relation to the submitted article, the following statement should be added directly in the manuscript: Conflict of interest: none.
In case there is a conflict of interest in relation to the submitted article, each co-author of the article must declare his or her conflicts of interest, according to the following example which will be inserted at the end of the article: Conflict of interest: C. R. Ad hoc interventions: consulting activities: Société alpha; E. L. Financial interests in a company: Société beta; J.-J. E. Clinical trials: as principal investigator, coordinator or principal investigator. Practicalities

The declaration of interest must also be included in the manuscript file (see examples above), before the references.
The journal El Hakim subscribes to the principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) (http://publicationethics.org/). Submitted work must comply with the ethical recommendations of the Declaration of Helsinki. They must have been submitted, if required, either to an advisory committee for the protection of persons in biomedical research (CCPPRB) or to an ethics committee. When a work has been submitted to one of these institutions, this must be mentioned in the text.
Acknowledgements, sources of funding
Acknowledgements and sources of funding should appear at the end of the article (before the references).
References
References are numbered in order of appearance in the text where they are placed in square brackets. The text of the references is placed after the text with the numbering in square brackets within the article. The names of periodicals are abbreviated according to Index Medicus. Avoid any expansion of text in these notes.
In this system, all abbreviations are capitalized and no full stops are given; the same applies to the initials of the authors’ first names. Up to six authors must be indicated by name. For more than six authors, the words “et al” should be used.

Tables
Tables should be typed in 1.5 line spacing and include their number, a title and any explanatory notes. They should be numbered in Arabic numerals and referred to in the text by their number. They should be included after the references (one page per table).
Figures
Illustrations (diagrams, figures [rendered anonymous]) should be numbered in Arabic numerals and indexed in the text by their number. The lettering (symbols, figures, etc.) must be uniform for all figures and of sufficient size to remain legible after reduction. Legends are included at the end of the manuscript, after the tables. Illustrations from another publication must be accompanied by the publisher’s written permission and the full reference of the original publication must be given in the caption.
Colour reproduction of figures in the paper version is possible, depending on their quality. The digital version is also in colour. Each figure is provided in a separate file. Figures should preferably be provided in Tif (.tif), EPS (.eps), or PDF (.pdf) format. Word, Powerpoint and Excel formats are also accepted. The minimum resolution of figures should be 300 dpi for black and white or colour photographs, and 500 to 1000 dpi for graphs or diagrams. High resolution is absolutely necessary for printing. To enable the editor to easily identify the figures submitted, it is recommended that the files be named with the figure number and the format used.
4. TRANSFER OF RIGHTS :
A transfer of rights form is sent to the corresponding author prior to proofing. It will be duly completed and signed by the principal author on behalf of all authors before being returned to the publisher.
5. PROOFREADING, REPRINTING AND REPRODUCTION REQUESTS :
The corresponding author will receive electronic proofs of his/her article in PDF format. Substantive changes will not be accepted on the proofs. Corrections will be limited to typography. Authors will ensure that these proofs are returned to the publisher, with their “bon à tirer”, within 48 hours of receipt at any time of the year. In case of delay, the publisher reserves the right to proceed with the printing without the author’s “bon à tirer”. The corresponding author will receive the PDF file of his/her article as an electronic reprint. An order form for additional offprints will be sent out before the proofs. Requests for reprints should be addressed to the publisher immediately after publication.
